Stress

Stress is the weight of existence on your life. It is a normal part of being alive. What turns it into misery is usually what we tell ourselves about it.

What's really going on

What people say"I'm so stressed." It gets used for everything from a busy week to feeling flattened.
What's usually happeningThree things get confused. Stress is the real load. Catastrophizing is predicting the load will crush you. Anxiety is what you feel when you do the second to the first. You can't always lighten the load, but you can stop adding to it.

What you might notice

  • Everything feels urgent, and you can't tell what actually is.
  • You lie awake running tomorrow's problems.
  • You snap at people who aren't the problem.
  • You keep saying you will deal with it when things calm down.

How we work on it

The same method every time: find the thought, test it, practice a better one.

  1. Sort the loadWe list what is actually on your plate and what is predicted, feared or borrowed from someone else.
  2. Catch the extra weightWe find the thoughts that turn a hard week into a disaster.
  3. Decide what is yours to carryThings you cannot control don't belong on your radar.
  4. Build the habitYou practice the sorting until it happens without the worksheet.

Questions

Is all stress bad?

No. Some load is how people get stronger. The goal is carrying it well, not living without it.

Is this coaching or therapy?

For residents of Arkansas and Missouri it is therapy. Leaders facing a big decision may fit Precision Strategy Method Coaching instead.

Is it burnout from my job?

If a job caused burnout, everyone in that job would burn out. The job is the load. What you conclude about it decides how heavy it gets.

How long does it take?

Many people notice a difference within a few sessions once they start sorting the load.
