Low mood and depression
A low mood usually rests on conclusions: about yourself, about how things will turn out and about whether anything you do will matter. Those conclusions can be tested.
What's really going on
What people say"I'm depressed." The label names how you feel. It doesn't tell you what is producing it.
What's usually happeningPeople who stay low for a long time are running steady verdicts: I'm failing, it won't get better, there's no point trying. The verdict cuts what you do. Doing less gives you less to show, and that seems to prove the verdict. Thought, action and result keep feeding each other, a loop I call Continuous Reciprocal Causation. It runs downhill or uphill. The work turns it at the thought.
What you might notice
- You have stopped doing things you used to enjoy, and you tell yourself it wouldn't help anyway.
- Small tasks feel like they take everything you have.
- You are hard on yourself in ways you would never be with a friend.
- Sleep, appetite or energy have changed for weeks at a time.
- You picture the future and it looks the same or worse.
How we work on it
The same method every time: find the thought, test it, practice a better one.
- Name the verdictsWe write down the conclusions you keep reaching about yourself and your future.
- Test themWe look for the evidence on both sides, the way a fair judge would.
- Motive, then movementFeet before feelings, with a reason first. You name why one small action matters, do it, and watch what it does to the verdict.
- Track the changeWe measure mood and activity week to week so you can see what moved.
Questions
How is low mood different from sadness?
Sadness follows what you conclude a loss means, and it eases as you make sense of it. A low mood that hangs on for weeks is kept going by conclusions that haven't been tested.
Do I need medication?
That is a question for a prescriber. Many people do this work with medication and many without it.
What if I don't have the energy to start?
Starting is the first piece of work, and we keep it small on purpose.
