A method I use

Neurofeedback

The front of your brain is where you weigh a choice before you act on it. Neurofeedback lets you watch that area work and practice making it work harder.

What's really going on

What people say"My brain is wired this way." Brains change with practice, the same way a muscle does.
What's usually happeningThe method I use, fNIRS HEG, reads blood flow in the front of the brain through a sensor on the forehead. You see that signal on a screen as you work, and you learn what you are doing in your head when it rises. That is the part of the brain you lean on to stop, think and choose before you react.

Where it can help

  • Acting before thinking, then regretting it.
  • Trouble holding attention on one thing.
  • Words that leave your mouth before you have checked the thought behind them.

How training works

Training supports the therapy. It does not replace it.

  1. Take a baselineA first reading of how the area responds when you try to focus.
  2. TrainShort rounds where you raise the signal and watch the screen respond.
  3. Connect it to real lifeWe tie the mental move you learned to the moments you want to handle better.
  4. Measure the changeReadings over the weeks show whether the training is taking hold.

Questions

Does it hurt?

No. The sensor rests on your forehead and only reads. Nothing is sent into your brain.

Is it proven?

The research is promising and still growing. I use it as one part of treatment, not as a cure.

Can I do it by video?

No. Training needs the equipment, so it happens only on site in Jonesboro.
